What is the 1098-C Form Used For?

The form is used to report the donation of a vehicle, boat, or airplane to a charitable organization. The 1098-C form is issued by the organization and is generally used for tax deduction purposes. 

For instance, if you donate something (a vehicle, boat, or airplane) worth more than $500, the organization will issue a 1098-C form, which you can use for tax deduction and record purposes.

Who Receives 1098-C?

A person who donates more than $500 worth of property to a charity receives a copy of 1098-C form. It can be used for tax deduction purposes. Further, it helps ensure the donation is correctly reported to the IRS.

Much like Form 1098 for mortgage interest or Form 1098-E for student loans, the 1098-C is to maximize their itemized deductions on Schedule A

Key Information on 1098-C:

1098-C contains a lot of information, and it’s mandatory to cross-check the form for accuracy. Here is essential information that must be accurate:

  • Donor Information, including name, SSN, and address
  • Donation description, including name, make year, kind, and more details.
  • The date of donation.
  • Any good or service received in exchange for a donation.
  • Donated property’s market price.

Deadlines of 1098-C Filing:

The charities must provide the 1098-C form to donors within 30 days of the donation. The property can be further sold or kept for use depending on the organization’s needs. Here are a few deadlines to file 1098-C from the donee end:

  • To the Donor: Generally within 30 days of sale/contribution.
  • Paper Filing: If you file on paper, the deadline is March 2nd 2026, the year after the donation.
  • Electronic Filing: If filing electronically, the deadline is March 31st of the year following the donation.

Quick Note: A “Qualified Organization” must file Form 1098-C if they receive a donation of a qualified vehicle with a claimed value of more than $500.

  • Log in to your E-File Workforce Payroll account or create one if you don’t have one already.

  • A new form will be on screen. Please fill out all the relevant details and submit them.

    Donating a vehicle allows you to get a tax deduction. However, you must file for an itemized deduction for Schedule A. 

    In general, no; however, if the donation exceeds $500, you will receive a 1098-C form. But, for small donations, the IRS may allow you to use substitute receipts. It’s better to keep a complete record of all donations made in a tax year and collect your 1098-Cs for tax and filing purposes.
